In reality, there is a basic problem to consider: cutting glass is not only a complex undertaking.
It can also be a dangerous activity. And you need to calculate the risk of breaking the work surface. In summary, you need to use special tools and techniques to cut glass. How do you proceed to complete this work that requires technical competence, precision, and deep material knowledge? Here are practical guidelines to follow.
The Basics for Safe Glass Cutting
To perform professional work, you need to carefully evaluate the physical principles of cutting. Glass shaping is based on a controlled fracture that is performed using dedicated tools. Like the glass cutter wheel that creates a surface microfracture.
Microfracture on which mechanical stresses concentrate. But glass cutting is not a material removal operation, like with saws or mills, but a guided fracture that exploits the structural characteristics of the material.
The grinding wheel for cutting glass - made of course from harder material such as hardened steel, tungsten carbide or diamond - exerts localized pressure on the surface of the glass sheet you want to shape. This pressure creates a permanent groove in the glass lattice, weakening the material structurally along the traced line.
When a flexural stress is applied to the scored sheet, the stress locally exceeds the material's resistance and the fracture propagates, following the energetically most favorable path created by the scratch with the glass cutter wheel.
About safety: remember to always wear protective glasses compliant with EN 166, optical class 1, medium impact resistance, cut-resistant gloves with protection level 5 according to EN 388, FFP2 mask, and clothing with long sleeves.
In Simple Words, How Do You Cut Glass?
The initial preamble, particularly technical, serves to explain that glass cutting must be done differently than other materials. For example, if you need to cut wood, you use circular saws with more or less wide teeth that dig into the material. And the same applies if you need to split a metal rod or sheet in two. To cut glass, however, you work differently.
But how do you proceed? Assuming cutting a simple glass sheet, you position it on a flat surface and mark the cutting line with a marker. Then with the dedicated glass cutter you draw a precise line, aided by a metal ruler or square. Finally, you use a cantilever plane to give a light tap and separate the two parts. Characteristics of the scoring:
- Pressure: 2-3 kg for glass 4-6mm.
- Speed: constant, about 10-15 cm/second.
- Single pass: never re-score on the same line.
- Wheel angle: 90° to the surface
You need to position the glass with the score aligned to the bank edge and apply pressure downward in the overhang section. Alternative: sharp tap with a small hammer along the line but you must avoid surface scratches that cause irregular fractures.
What Tools to Use for Cutting Glass?
Clearly, the use of certain tools is fundamental to achieving adequate results. Starting with the assumption that cutting very thick and laminated sheets can be done only in a specialized workshop, with industrial tools like the professional cutting table and CNC systems with numerical control, we recall that for shaping standard float glass:
- Glass cutters with hardened steel wheel.
- Lubricating oil for more intensive activities.
This solution is perfect for glass up to 6 millimeters thick; for panels of 10 and intensive use, the wheel in tungsten carbide is recommended, which has greater wear resistance than steel and lasts longer on average compared to other solutions.
The diamond wheel is recommended for even greater thicknesses since it provides a clean cut with less applied pressure. Other tools for cutting glass: pliers with wide jaws for breaking sheets marked by the wheel, rulers and metal squares.
The compass is used to cut circular shapes in glass. Position the suction cup element in the central area, adjust the radius on the graduated arm, and perform a complete rotation with constant pressure: with a little pressure you've made a hole in the glass.
Can I Cut Tempered Glass? And Patterned Glass?
Thermally tempered glass cannot be cut after the tempering process. Any attempt to score it causes the entire sheet to shatter instantly into thousands of fragments, so be very careful not to cut yourself. Patterned glass with decorations can be cut, but you need to score the smooth side and increase the pressure by 10-15% compared to float glass.
