Cutting a Steel Cable: Useful Techniques and Tools
One of the challenges for those involved in DIY and industrial work: finding a way to cut a steel cable precisely, without fraying the braided rope with the various metal wires. Which are responsible for fundamental resistance to achieve results.
We can do great things with these steel ropes, from supporting minimal weights as happens when hanging clothes to connecting very heavy elements. However, you must remember that cutting a steel rope can be an important challenge given that diameters increase significantly in industrial applications. What are the best methods for cutting a steel rope or cable?
How Are Steel Cables Made?
To understand how to cut metal ropes, even the most resistant ones, we need to discover how they are made. The starting point is individual thin steel wires - diameters ranging from about 0.15 to 3 mm - that are first spirally wound to form strands (or lays) that can have a different number of wires: 7, 19 or 37. The strands are wound around a central core.
A core that can be natural or synthetic fiber if flexibility is needed, metallic for applications requiring strength. The steel used is carbon steel, often galvanized to resist corrosion. For applications that require strength, stainless steel is used.
Tools for Cutting a Metal Rope
Before we start cutting a steel cable, we need to consider the various alternatives in terms of equipment. A good workshop that deals with this work should have a range of well-known tools available. For cables:
- Up to 4–5 mm, a quality cable cutter is sufficient.
- From 6 to 10 mm, a steel rope cutter is needed.
- Over 10 mm, we move to locking pliers with specific blades.
Pliers dedicated to cutting steel ropes have sharp and robust jaws that cut cleanly without crushing too much. These are models with concave profiles designed not to crush the cable. The angle grinder (flex) is almost indispensable for thick cables.

Use a thin metal cutting disc. The problem? It creates heat that can alter the steel's properties in the cutting zone, and especially tends to fray the wires. Work carefully and stop before going all the way to the bottom.
How to Cut a Cable Without Fraying It
Of course, everything changes based on the type of tool you've decided to use. But there's a fundamental trick: before cutting, you need to lock the cable on both sides of the cut to prevent it from fraying. The alternatives you can use are different, they also depend on the diameter of the rope you want to cut. For smaller models, you can wrap thin metal wire tightly.
Or you can use electrical tape (at least 2-3 wraps per side). When the diameter of the steel rope increases, it's better to switch to metal hose clamps or temporary clamps: if you don't lock it, the steel rope will fray once cut, opening like a fan and becoming unmanageable. Leave about 1-2 cm between the bindings and the cutting point.
After cutting, many close the ends with adhesive tape, rubber caps, or apply locking terminals with pressed sleeves. It depends on the final use of the cable, for more intensive applications this should be considered.
Tips for Cutting Cables with Precision
When you need to cut a cable, focus everything on tension: keep the rope always taut, but not in a way that's dangerous for potential cuts. It's enough to pull it by hand or fix it in a vise, then cut with determination: if you use scissors, close the blades with a sharp blow, without chewing on the rope or you risk ruining the final result.
With the grinder, incise with a quick and straight cut, but wear goggles and gloves because small steel wires and sparks fly. If wires stick out, file or sand with an abrasive disc. Then re-wrap tape or apply a terminal to prevent future fraying.
How to cut cables at the industrial level? The hydraulic cable cutter is the cleanest and safest option. It has a piston that closes the blades with enormous force and cuts even tough steel cables with one decisive blow. If you need to do it professionally or repeatedly, this is the right choice.
