But in certain situations, the HEX chuck will be fundamental. Let's try to deepen this topic together, which is never addressed in the right way. But it can make the difference.

What is a HEX Chuck, Definition

With this term we mean the type of attachment for drill bits and screwdriver bits in hexagonal shape rather than the classic cylindrical attachment. The part that is inserted into the drill chuck has a hexagonal 6-sided section instead of being round. This system has some concrete advantages that become essential when we talk about continuous and intensive applications.

Why is the HEX Chuck Used, the Advantages

First of all we have an anti-slip function: the hexagonal shape of the bit or drill point prevents it from spinning freely in the chuck, which can happen with cylindrical chucks when there is high torque. However, this mainly occurs with screwdriver tips. In any case, many professionals prefer this solution precisely because there is better torque transmission: since it is a coupling based on a structured shape, namely a hexagon, all the force is transmitted better.

The quick change that occurs thanks to the hexagonal chuck is another reason to prefer HEX: many modern screwdrivers and drills have quick-release chucks that allow you to change the bit in a second without tightening/loosening the chuck.

What are the Sizes of the HEX Chuck?

The main sizes of the hexagonal chuck (HEX) are three. The main one is the 1/4" of 6.35 mm: it is the most common standard for bits and points, compatible with almost all electric screwdrivers and drills with quick-release bit holders. The 5/16" size, or 7.94 mm, is less common, used for high-torque applications or more robust bits. The same goes for the 3/8" of 9.53 mm: this type of hexagonal chuck is rare, used on adapters or heavy professional tools. You will rarely come across this solution.

Is it Always Worth Using This Hexagonal Chuck?

If the HEX chuck is advantageous, why isn't it used as a standard? Simple, for precision work with actual drill bits, the classic cylindrical chuck mounted in a self-tightening 3-jaw chuck remains still preferable.

HEX is the best choice for screwing and quick work; the round chuck is still fundamental for bits that must drill hard materials and to manage universal compatibility between power tools. In fact, the round chuck fits into any three-jaw chuck without adapters.
