Removing a Damaged Stud: How to Do It and Which Tools to Use
A problem that plagues those who deal with mechanics full-time: you need to extract a broken or damaged stud from an engine block, a crankcase or any other metal structure that won't let go of this element. A stud, besides being particularly robust and tenacious in grip, is also a type of bolt difficult to deal with since it has no anchor points. In the worst situations everything seems lost and you almost think the best solution is to replace it.
However, an engine block is usually particularly expensive. Moreover, it's not worth dismantling an entire drive unit because of a stud that won't come out. Do you want to solve the problem by extracting without particular trauma? Here's the solution.
What is a stud, technical definition
Before understanding how to extract, it's worth delving into the concept of stud itself. What is it? With this term, in mechanics, we mean a type of bolt with two threaded sides used to join two or more components. What are its characteristics?

Great robustness and no element to exploit wrench or pipe keys to tighten or loosen. The basic characteristic of the stud is exactly this: it allows a stable and secure connection between the various components without the use of additional nuts or bolts. Nevertheless, it can happen that you need to resort to specific operations to remove damaged studs.
The possible damage to a metal stud
Although particularly robust, studs undergo various injuries and fractures. One of the most common is thread stripping: precisely because they often have to bear great loads, in many cases they proceed with important tightening.
To tighten the nuts of a stud, you must actually use a torque wrench (here's a dedicated guide on the topic) that reaches the exact point of force to ensure safety without damaging the support. In other cases, however, the wear of the metal leads to more serious injuries even to the point of breaking the stud in the seat. It's a remote but possible option. How to solve?
How to remove damaged or broken studs
First of all we must assess the extent of the damage. If we are faced with a broken stud that still allows exploiting part of the thread, we can use the double nut technique: we screw one all the way in, then add another one right after. While I continue to tighten the latter, the first one is unscrewed. This allows us to create a sort of lock.
And if I continue to unscrew the first while keeping the second still, I can extract the damaged stud. Still a not very serious situation: the stud is broken or stripped but offers a good number of centimeters for pipe wrench work.
How and when to use extractors for broken studs
In these cases there is a need for a specific tool: the extractor, better if in alloy steel like the Krino models. It is a tool that allows you to unscrew bolts, screws and studs that no longer have an external anchor element on which to take hold. The operation is simple: you need to drill the blocked element with a drill bit with a specific diameter.

Immediately after, you screw the extractor into the hole. This will be the essential condition to unscrew a stud broken at a point where it cannot be grasped or blocked in any other way. Once secured, pipe wrenches help you unscrew without problems. But you always need a minimum of metal to apply force. Otherwise, extractors for stuck screws are needed.
Be careful, the peculiarity of the tool is that it has a reverse thread. So it is screwed counter-clockwise. This allows, when it reaches the end stop, to tighten inside the stud and to unscrew the blocked element. Obviously, in a workshop it can be useful to have kits with different sizes so you are ready and can handle all conditions.
