Procedures and Tools for Grinding a Weld Bead

After joining two pieces of metal you need to understand how to clean the weld bead. That is the point where the two sections have fused together. The quality of the result depends on many factors. First of all on the skill of the welder and his ability to complete a job with the fewest possible inaccuracies and imperfections. Then there are details that also relate to the technique used.

For example, electrode welding - that is with the classic electrode that leaves weld points on the joints - requires superior skill to have solid and clean results compared to continuous wire welding (MIG-MAG).

This is even more true with a TIG weld that basically gives linear and pleasant results to look at. In any case, however, we must have clear information on how to clean the weld bead, removing stains and grinding out imperfections.

What is the weld bead and what is it for

Before we understand how to grind and clean imperfections, we need to have a clear understanding of this element. The bead is the base metal and the fused and solidified filler material. It represents the point where two pieces of metal join through the work of an electrode welder, MIG-MAG or TIG. Therefore, in addition to being a delicate point, it can also become a source of:

Structural damage.
Aesthetic problems.

A well-made weld bead has the objective of eliminating imperfections and ensuring weld quality. Can we work on this element to improve it? Of course but first we must start from a base that is qualitatively flawless.

The aesthetic and structural problems of the bead

Often people think about cleaning a weld bead after the joining operation. In reality we must know that the aesthetic defects of this element often also concern structural passages. For example, if the weld bead is very high we have an excess of over-metal that causes a structural weakness in the weld, the same can be said for the exact opposite.

That is a lack of material. Then there are splatters and molten deposits that become a point of support for corrosion and different colorations caused by inadequate gas. So, in short, before cleaning and grinding the weld let's make sure the bead is executed properly. Then we can start thinking about improvements to apply.

Clean the weld from imperfections

The first method to remove the most important part of the weld bead and its excess material: hammer blows. Be careful, you can't proceed with just any tool but with a welding hammer. What exactly are we talking about?

It's a tool with pointed and chisel-shaped ends to remove welding excesses when not yet permanently hardened. This way you avoid ruining the work done. Then you need to use an iron brush to file and deburr everything.

Grinding the bead with an angle grinder

One of the most convenient, fast and widely used solutions for cleaning the weld bead: the use of an angle grinder with discs suitable for this job. The first point to emphasize is the choice of power tool: if possible better a small model if you work on pipes, corners and tight spaces. This way it will be easier to handle, this is a finishing job: large discs are not needed.

To this end, we must mount a grinding wheel not for cutting but for consuming and finishing. For this the flap discs are useful - which can be of different quality - useful for leveling the weld and working on the smoothing of the welded metal.

The structure of this disc includes a series of elements that, overlapped, allow grinding without damage. As long as the disc is used correctly. That is, perpendicular to the bead: you must maintain an inclination capable of leveling.

Clearly there are also different discs for roughing: you can use a rough one to remove excess material and then a finishing one to give the final touch. Always remember to not overdo it with pressure and not compromise the weld in its strength.
