How to Remove Old Paint from Wood

Stripping wood is one of the fundamental operations to obtain good results in terms of maintenance and restructuring of the surfaces you need to work on. There are methods for planing, cutting and drilling wood with precision. You can also paint this material to restore it to its ancient splendor and if there is a fundamental characteristic of wood it is just this.

With the proper precautions you can do anything. Even change shape and design. but you need to learn to strip the surface because there is no worse mistake than applying new paint (colored or transparent) over the old one. The result will be terrible. And then there are different methods for stripping wood, here are some useful solutions with relative tools to put into play.

Why do you need to strip wood?

Let's start with a small discussion of the reasons that lead you to remove the old paint and recover the wood to its natural state. This must be done first and foremost to allow the new paint to adhere well to the porous surface.

Only this way can the enamel protect the wood from atmospheric agents. Then there is an aesthetic motivation to respect: overlaying layers of paint means, automatically, obtaining a mediocre, questionable result. Not to mention terrible. How do you proceed?

The methods for removing paint from wood

We anticipated it, there are several ways to achieve this result. The process of stripping wood depends on several factors. For example on the volume of the object, on the amount of enamel to remove, on the type of wood. In this article we describe a series of processes that represent the standard to follow to eliminate - with good results - the old paint.

Industrial options for stripping

Among the various solutions useful for detaching paint from wood we have options to apply to large quantities of wood, furniture of significant proportions and large volumes of work. We are talking about sandblasting: certainly this method - which involves the use of sand grains - allows obtaining professional results in quick times. The process: a gun connected to the sand tank and compressed air fires the elements at high speed and with a constant flow onto the wood, stripping off the paint.

Clearly this is a solution suitable for those who work with these procedures every day although there are small sandblasters. However, they must be used with specific PPE and with the necessary skills to avoid damaging the wood.

Chemical strippers for wood

In many cases it can be useful to work with chemical stripping. It consists, in a nutshell, in the use of specific products to make the accumulated enamel react. There are different solutions, water-based ones are less powerful although the procedure is the same: you distribute the product on the wood you want to treat and wait for a time you should read on the instruction booklet.

The paint begins to swell and peel off: with a spatula you can pass the edge to simplify and speed up the work. Remember that these products must always be used outdoors, in ventilated areas and using appropriate PPE (gloves, glasses and mask).

Hot techniques for stripping

One of the solutions for stripping wood in quick times even if we have to deal with large surfaces with many accumulated layers of paint: use a heat gun to burn off the paint layer. The necessary tools - in addition to those for generating heat and the appropriate PPE - are those that allow you to remove the various layers of enamel. So you need spatulas and scrapers.

How do you operate? Once the surface is clean you proceed with heating the wood: the heat gun must be kept at a distance of about 5/10 centimeters. When you see the paint start to swell and peel off, pass the spatula to help the paint layer free the wood. Remember that a good heat gun is equipped with nozzles to direct the hot air to specific points or over large surfaces. And to work on details you might need specific spatulas, equipped with special angles and edges.

Methods for removing paint by hand

These are the techniques that involve the use of hand tools and power tools to remove the old paint from the wood. Certainly these are methods suitable for maintaining control of every step, so they are used mainly when we need to carefully evaluate the quality of the result. What are the solutions to implement? We need to work with sandpaper and sander.

By passing the abrasive paper over the surface you consume the paint based on the pressure and the value of the chosen grit. This allows you to bring the wood to its natural condition, both in terms of color and protective layer. So, in practice, you have the material bare.

The substantial difference with the other methods: there is the risk of consuming the wood as well if you don't dose the pressure well. Also, it is very important to apply the sandpaper evenly, moving from a coarser solution to a finishing one. This means that initially you use the spatula to remove any layers of paint that easily flake off and come away.

If all this is not enough you can ask for help from sanders which allow you to automate the movement and speed up the work of sandpaper sheets. There are different models with shapes suitable for large surfaces or corners. Remember the difference between orbital sander and random orbital sander: the first only makes an oscillatory movement while the second also rotates to give more force to the sanding action. And it is the ideal solution for more challenging work, when there is a lot of paint to remove.
