How to Sand and Smooth Wood Effectively
Sanding wood is fundamental for processing. Through sanding you can eliminate imperfections and make it pleasant to look at and touch. But that's not the only reason why you should invest in sanding wood.
Often it's also about managing some structural aspects, certainly it's important to sand the surface to make it suitable for future painting. The passage of different stains like the impregnator can help you a lot to protect the wood from the elements.
So from rain and other atmospheric agents. But to be able to work in this direction and paint wood without imperfections you must sand the surface. The options? There are solutions for sanding wood, and just as many tools that you need to evaluate.
Prepare and clean the surface
The first step to optimally sand wood: remove all imperfections. If, for example, you're treating an old window or door you must remove dust and dirt and dry perfectly also in remote corners.
Then you must remove all screws and bolts, perhaps with some force to unscrew stripped pins. If instead you're treating a piece of raw wood you must rough it up and debarked by removing branches with leaves, various growths and cumbersome surfaces.
For this smoothing operation you can use manual rasps, they serve to remove the largest and coarsest part of the wood to be worked. There are professional debarkers and blades to use with both hands to remove large quantities of wood.
Remove wood layers if necessary

Proceed with sanding the wood
Once the base is prepared, proceed with sanding. You may need to strip the wood first. Apply a chemical solution to curl the paint layer and then use a scraper. It's enough to apply the agent with a brush to easily remove the old paint and the same applies to the heat gun: you pass it over the surface and then remove the paint layer with a spatula.
There are also scrapers specifically designed for corners. Now you can sand the wood with sandpaper, the ideal solution to eliminate imperfections. You can sand by hand or with an electric tool like an orbital sander.
You use the rotary orbital sander (which adds rotation in addition to circular movement) if you have a more demanding job to do and wood that is very compromised. You start with coarse sandpaper, double grit, to remove the most consistent part.
Then proceed with fine sandpaper, finer and more delicate, to work on details. For finishing work you can use tools with particular shapes, like sanders with triangular attachments: they help you work with greater precision.
Focus on smoothing details
After sanding wood and removing all resulting material you can proceed with the treatment you prefer, with paint or other type of stain. Once it's dry and optimally treated remember the details for polishing: use a specific and nourishing oil, let it rest and then remove the material with a soft cloth. So you'll have smooth, shiny and always beautiful wood.
