We know that with a good screwdriver you can avoid unnecessary effort, speed up operations and tighten screws or pins with a force that you wouldn't be able to exert on any more or less hard surface.
The screwdriver must have the right power and versatility of use, so it can be used for both precision work and more difficult to manage activities with simple manual keys or screwdrivers. It goes without saying that these tools are always necessary. But in repetitive and more strenuous work, the screwdriver makes the difference. Which power should you prefer? What Should You Look at Before Buying?
There are a couple of questions to address to understand what the ideal power of your next screwdriver should be. The first: what are the fundamental parameters to observe? Here is a series of real technical data that determine the performance of a screwdriver suitable for intensive and heavy use, such as in a mechanical workshop or on a production line.
The first point is the battery voltage (12V, 18V, and so on). It indicates the energy potential, but by itself it doesn't tell you how powerful the screwdriver is. To get a precise idea, you also need to consider the torque, how strong the screwdriver can turn.
You also need to know the number of revolutions per minute. Calculate that the torque is divided into soft and hard: the first is the one used for screwing without damaging (adjustable with the ring), the second is the force available for more intensive work. A few practical examples:
- 10-20 Nm: furniture assembly.
- 30-50 Nm: general household use.
- 60-100 Nm: construction work, large bolts.
These are the parameters: voltage, torque, speed for screwing, unscrewing, and drilling. Then we have the Ampere/hour for autonomy. A 2.0 Ah battery lasts half as long as a 4.0 Ah battery at equal work. Only for impact screwdrivers do we also consider axial blows as a parameter: the percussion frequency with number of blows/minute is very important for these construction tools.
What to Do, Which Screwdriver Models to Use
The best way to choose the power of the screwdriver: assess the activity to be performed. Only in this way can you evaluate what is the ideal condition. In summary: the more demanding the work, the greater not only the power needed but also the stability required. Because it's no use having a lot of power in a single moment; you also need to evaluate the ability to operate for several hours.
So, for example, an ultra-compact model is fine for assembling IKEA furniture, screwing small screws into soft wood, doing light work. These are pocket models, great for working in tight spaces, but they have limited torque around 5/10 Nm.
For more demanding activities - installing shelves, screwing into drywall, drilling into not too hard walls - models that reach 40/50 Nm are preferred. These are handy tools and not too heavy, unlike semi-professional and professional options where 50/70 Nm of torque is exceeded. These models are perfect if you need to work with hard materials like solid construction wood in which you need to fasten long screws. Or perhaps you need to use the screwdriver for many hours or entire days.
Power: Better With or Without Battery?
This is a myth that never dies: a corded screwdriver is more powerful than a battery-powered one. In theory this is the case, but there are some upstream considerations to follow. Indeed, the starting point suggests that directly powered models are indeed more powerful if only because they never have energy drops and manage to sustain the torque constantly, but the latest generation batteries (lithium 18V/4-5 Ah) no longer have these problems. And they are valid for 90% of the work to do around the house or in the workshop.
Then, if the battery is low you replace it and everything returns as before. So, in theory the corded model is ideal for intensive work but in contemporary practice this is an outdated technology for screwdrivers. Buy a battery-powered screwdriver, unless you have very specific needs in terms of power and intensity. But in that case you're working on different fronts.

Furthermore, they don't need to be powered by a compressor, no cables complicating the work area. Pneumatic screwdrivers are the ultimate in terms of power, and are used to remove/install wheels and bolts of a motor. But the reality is simple: unless you're a professional mechanic who has to work every day with automotive and motorcycle components, this tool is an unnecessary expense.
